Gateway rolls FX6800 towers with Core i7

Gateway rolls FX6800 towers with Core i7Gateway has added to the mix of PC makers launching Core i7 systems on Monday through the launch of the FX6800. Besides using the new processor, each model adds a third RAM stick to exploit the third memory channel added through Intel's new X58 chipset and also comes with an upgrade to the baseline for graphics and storage over earlier models.

The FX6800-01e is the starter system and comes with a 2.66GHz Core i7, 3GB of RAM, a 750GB hard drive and a Radeon HD 4850 for its graphics. It ships solely to Best Buy for $1,250.

The most widely available model, the FX6800-05, is available through multiple online resellers and boosts the system to a 2.93GHz chip, 6GB of memory and a Radeon HD 4870 X2. It also has the relatively unique combination of an 80GB solid-state drive and a 1TB rotating hard disk that gives users the choice of installing certain apps on a high-performance drive without sacrificing larger storage. The additions push the price up to $3,000.

Both the 01e and 05 should be available today.
