Jasper-based X360 consoles hit store shelves

Jasper-based X360 consoles hit store shelvesMicrosoft's Jasper-based Xbox 360 consoles are finally arriving in stores, according to forum posts found on xbox-scene [1|2], with photographs detailing both the internal and external features of the new models. The Jasper model consoles feature a smaller 65nm process die for the graphics chip, decreasing overall power consumption and heat generation. The move is expected to reduce "red ring of death" failures in consoles.

Two key indicators for the consoles lie in the serial numbers and power supplies for the models. The older Falcon models draw 14.2A, whereas the new Jaspers only use 12.1A power supplies. Serial numbers require a bit of decoding to understand, but ultimately show the date the main board inside the Xbox was manufactured. Forum goer Moddage believes that any model made on or after October 23rd 2008 should be a Jasper.

The internals reveal a Jasper sticker on the top edge of the main board, and approximate measurements taken line up with specifications offered by Microsoft.

"Red ring of death" failures are lashing the Redmond software and electronics giant, with a class action lawsuit leveled at the company, citing that Microsoft knew about the issue as early as the November 2005 launch. The suit looks to provide a refund program for dissatisfied owners, as well as Microsoft giving up profits on the console.
