Apple today has started shipping early orders for its 24-inch LED Cinema Display, according to reader reports. The word comes two days ahead of previous official estimates and potentially sees some orders arrive by the weekend depending on timing alongside the US Thanksgiving holiday. Availability at Apple's own retail stores should also follow soon.
The $899 LCD earns its namesake through an LED backlight that reduces power consumption and eliminates toxins while also improving the image quality of the display itself by producing more uniform lighting. It also represents Apple's first display to use DisplayPort, which both reduces the size of the cable and supports limited two-way signals.
The new Cinema Display currently requires one of Apple's new MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro systems and serves as a complete display dock for these portables, providing 2.1-channel audio, an iSight webcam, a three-port USB hub and a MagSafe power connector for charging the notebooks.
Apple continues to list new orders as shipping between 7 to 10 business days from the online Apple Store.
