M-Audio has announced the ProFire 610 FireWire audio interface, bridging the gap between the FireWire 410 and the flagship ProFire 2626. The new device claims to provide several high-end features, including 24-bit/192KHz resolution, preamps, and integrated DSP mixing, all in a smaller, bus-powered form factor. The 610 can be used for recording or live production, using a variety of analog and digital inputs.
Creation of 7.1-channel surround at 24-bit/192kHz is possible with simultaneous 6x10 I/O. Inputs include two XLR/TS combo jacks, two 1/4 inch TRS line inputs, and stereo S/PDIF digital; outputs incorporate eight 1/4 inch TRS lines and a stereo S/PDIF out. For interfacing with software, the device features a MIDI interface and two FireWire ports. The ProFire 610 can also be used standalone as a two-mic pre-/two-channel A/D to D/A converter. Shipping will begin sometime in the third quarter of this year, with a price set at $500.
