GigaByte Communications, maker of GSmart-branded handsets, on Thursday introduced a pair of identical looking cellphones, the MW702 and MS802 smartphones. The pair will first launch in Hungary, with the MW702 available on Friday, and will offer the company‘s advanced Smart Touch II user interface to control the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Targeted at business users, the phones will include a GPS module that will allow geotagging of photos taken by their 3-megapixel camera and sending out messages that contain position information. The main difference between the two handsets is the MS802 support of the 3G HSDPA network, while the MW702 makes do with the slower, older EDGE network.
The touch interface was fully developed in-house at GigaByte Communications and features improvements over the original Smart Touch interface, as well as more intuitive and personal control than similar interfaces from competitors, says the company. New features include the ability to add icons for newly installed programs to the shortcut manager. Users also have the ability to change the wallpaper of their phones and the appearance of the icons of the smart touch interface. Contacts can be added automatically from a SIM card, and accessed by sliding up the screen with a drag of the finger across the screen.
The center section of the screen can be changed to display the calendar and remind users of their scheduled meetings, with numbers on a specific date representing the amount of appointments scheduled for that day. Smart Touch II will also allow switching between Windows and other interfaces installed on the phone just by pressing an icon on the screen. Pricing information or a release date for the MS802 have not been announced, nor if or when the pair will come to the North American market. [viaMS Mobiles]
